Jaz has an amazing ability to describe food and wine, in both official languages! He's been sharing his warm personality and technical mastery of the fascinating world of wines and spirits with residents and visitors to the Bow Valley since 2008 when he joined Canmore Wine Merchants - Purveyors of Uncommon Wines, Spirits and Beers.
Jaz studied the intricacies of pairing food and wine with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust in Calgary (2009) and Vocational Studies Accreditation in Sherbrook, Quebec (2007), graduating first in class. Prior to becoming a Sommelier, Jaz worked as a Fine Dining Server and Wine Steward in high-end restaurants in Québec, Alberta, Nova Scotia and Australia (2002-07). He has a Diploma of Vocational Studies in Food Services (2002).
Dennis was born and raised in Alberta but has an affinity for travel, so when travelling why not experience the finer things in life while abroad. Wine tastings in Southern France and Northern Italy, Napa, Argentina.
How about whiskey tours through Scotland including making whiskey which will hit the stores in a few more years. Rums from Anguilla, Antigua, and Barbados. Not to mention beers; Germany, Ireland, Czech Republic, micros from all over Canada and US. Nectar. Canmore Wine Merchants was an opportunity to sample and share some of these favourites.
Grant hails originally from Canada's most Southern Province, Australia. Having worked in the Australian Wine Industry with the Wyndham group he later became involved in wine importing. Due to the large wine production in Australia and New Zealand most wine retailers stock very little else. Introducing "international wines" to the Australian public was the start of Grant's fascination with the "Uncommon"- small wineries, different grapes, experimental wine making techniques. Moving to Canada in 2002 offered an opportunity to access and promote an Aladdin's Cave of viniferous delights and thus Canmore Wine Merchants was born..
Matt grew up in Canmore, but also spent a number of years away travelling visiting Australia, New Zealand, and living in England and Europe where he obtained his WSET. He's been in and out of the wine business since 1998 when he first started at Alberta Spirits working his way up to Assistant Manager before jetting of on his assorted travels for the next decade.
Alas the siren call of the bow valley was soon to call him back and in 2008 her returned to Canmore where he started a family, and worked at the store, these days he mainly sells insurance but as Jaz will tell you he shows up once in a while (especially when a rep is opening something) to help out and make sure everyone gets the bottle of wine they deserve. If he's out of uniform don't be afraid to ask his advice, he's always willing to help out a fellow wino.
